BELCHER...
Kathleen
Belcher
My Mother was born 7th November 1923,
Grangehill Road, Eltham. She married firstly George Henry
Miles MACHARDIE at St Johns Eltham Parish Church in November
1941. they had two children. When my Father died aged 47
in 1968, Mum remarried to John Victor PAINE on 21st December
1968, Woolwich Registry Office. They had no children. Mum
died just recently on 28th December 2007 at Riverlee Care
Home, Greenwich.
Albert BELCHER 'Pop'
Albert, called Bert but known to most
of us as Pop, is someone I can remember with fondness, but
only remember him in the later part of his life. He was born
29th January 1896 in Rolls Road Bermondsey,Surrey (now London)son
of Reuben BELCHER and Mary Ann WAKELING. The 1901
census shows him living with his family at142 Sandhurst
Road, Deptford,Kent (now London). His Mother in Law and Brother
in Law are also living with them, plus a Monthly Nurse (wet
nurse)

I knew that Pop had worked at Woolwich
Arsenal during WW2, and I had always believed he was an Army
man during WW1, being sent home to recover from shrapnel injuries.
His WW1 Experience is a lot different
to the one I had believed. Read about it HERE.
Albert married Emily KEENE, my Grandmother,
in St Lukes Church, Eltham
on 1st November 1919. At this time he was living in Grangehill
Road, Eltham, Kent, and the story goes that he met her
on Waterloo Bridge. The first child of the marriage Doris,
died at age 6months, but they went on to have 6 children,
Albert, Kathleen(my Mother), Eileen, Edith, Leonard and Raymond.

Reuben BELCHER
Reuben, my Great Grandfather, was
born in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire
in 1869 to John BELCHER and Charlotte WOODWARD. He married
Mary Ann WAKELING in Greenwich, 1893. Charlotte WOODWARD's
history HERE
The 1901 census
shows them living at Sandhurst Road,
Deptford, Kent, his occupation being a bricklayers labourer.
Trixie is shown as their first child, born in 1889, but as
she was born before their marriage, it is not clear if Reuben
is her Father. They had 4 other children,John Arthur, Albert(Grandfather),
Hector and Sidney.
Reuben died at a young age, just 45,
in Woolwich, 1915.
John BELCHER
John , my Gt Gt Grandfather was born
1831 in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire
to William BELCHER and Rachel BARRETT. Down Ampney is a small
village and beautiful part of the world. He first married
Sarah HEWER in 1850 , Down Ampney, and they had 2 children,
George in 1851, and then Richard in 1854. Sarah was the daughter
of John HEWER and Mary SMITH. In the 1851
census, John and Srah lived next door to her Family, with
his on the other side. When Sarah died in 1860, John remained
a widower for while, and lived in Down Ampney as a Farm Labourer,
then married Charlotte WOODWARD 31 Mary 1868 in Cirencester.
They had 9 children, all with 'Royal'names. William, Reuben,
John William, Ernest, Louisa, Albert, Frederick, Kate and
finally Emily. Moving from Down Ampney, they lived in Whiteways
Farm, Cirencester c.1871 (census),
then moved to Yew tree Cottage, Caterham,
Surrey (1881 census), Merstham, Surrey(1891
census), Oakwood Road, Bletchingly,
Surrey (1901 census) Johns occupation is decribed as Farm
carter, but also as Farm Manager and mostly the houses were
tied cottages on the Farms.
William BELCHER
William, my Gt Gt Gt Grandfatherwas
born to John BELCHER and Susannah HARRIS in 1794, Coleshill,
Berkshire, and baptised as William BELCHER alias 'GOSLING'.
He married Rachel BARRATT 1 July 1826 in Down
Ampney, Gloucestershire. His occupation is described as
a Gamekeeper in most census. William and Rachel had 7 children
, Elizabeth, John, Edwin, Eliza, Enos, Michael and William.
William died in 1868 in Berkshire. From here the story starts
to get confusing.......
John BELCHER
John, my Gt Gt Gt Gt Grandfather
was probably born in 1765, Shellingford,
Berkshire. He married Susan Harris 6th November 1765 in Coleshill,
Berkshire. They had 7 children, Twins Thomas and Mary, Jane,
John, William, John and Elizabeth. John and Elizabeth are
the only children that survived. They were baptised BELCHER
alias GOSLING. The mystery has stumped me, and I have turned
to Berkshire record office for some help.
